Buyers Guide
What is the purpose of this manual?
To give you everything you need (objectives, timings, handouts and visuals) to run three different workshops designed to train appraisers and appraisees so that they have the skills to participate effectively in appraisal discussions.
Is it for me? What is the target population for this manual?
This manual is written specifically for trainers, tutors and facilitators.
Who wrote the manual?
The author is Bernard Redshaw, an experienced consultant specialising in management and organisational development. Train the trainer, coaching and appraising skills are his particular area of expertise. He has vast international experience as a trainer in places such as Jordan, Hungary, Russia, Poland and Slovakia.
What difference will it make?
Basically, it will mean that appraisal discussions will become more purposeful and effective in your organisation. This in turn means that staff are more likely to be committed and motivated. The hallmarks of an effective appraisal system are that:
- It is fully owned by the managers and staff - everyone wants it to work well
- Managers use appraisals as a vital management tool
- Staff welcome appraisals as a vital contributor to their growth and development
All the materials in this manual are designed to achieve these ends.
In how many ways could I use the manual?
You could:
- Check out the effectiveness of your present appraisal system (there is a section in the manual devoted to this)
- Draw up criteria for the training of appraisers and appraisees (the manual has checklists)
- Run the ready-made workshops and using all the materials supplied. The workshops on offer are:
A two-day introductory workshop
A half-day workshop for appraisees
A one-day refresher workshop.
- Select the handouts/visuals that suit your particular circumstances and build them into your own bespoke programmes
- Photocopy whichever parts of the manual you find useful and want to distribute as handouts
So, why should I buy it?
Because this manual will provide you with tried-and-tested materials that will save you hours of work. Getting appraisals to work well in your organisation is definitely worthwhile – particularly if they are mandatory and approached, as they so often are, with reluctance. If appraisals have to be done - let them be done well.
