Buyers Guide
What is the purpose of this manual?
This manual focuses exclusively on delegation - a key management skill. It contains 10 tried-and-tested training modules, together with all the handouts and visual aids a trainer needs to run the modules effectively. The materials are designed to help managers appreciate the importance of delegation, to take stock of their current delegation practices (by using a self-assessment questionnaire), and to work out what delegation skills to improve.
Is it for me? What is the target population for this manual?
The manual is written for busy trainers/facilitators/coaches with a responsibility for helping managers to improve their overall effectiveness. Even though delegation is a ‘must’ for every manager, anxieties about losing control and being let down, mean that many managers are timorous delegators. The modules in this manual confront these issues.
Who wrote the manual?
Dr Peter Honey who, for over 30 years worked as a management consultant and executive coach in a variety of organisations. In this capacity, Peter helped hundreds of managers to become better at getting the best out of their people - and this included delegating effectively.
What difference will it make?
The manual will give you the ammunition you need to convince managers that delegation is at the heart of management and leadership. Effective delegation brings important benefits for delegators, delegatees, customers and the organisations as a whole. In a nutshell, effective delegation means that:
- More work gets done cost effectively
- Managers are freed up to use their time more effectively
- Staff are developed and more motivated
- Customers deal with well informed, capable and responsible staff.
Everyone gains!
In how many ways could I use the manual?
As a trainer you could:
- Use any or all of the 10 ready-to-use modules.
- Incorporate any of the handouts and/or visual aids into your own training programmes.
- Take ideas from any of the modules and adapt them to suit your trainer style and circumstances.
- Use the Delegation Questionnaire (either the self-assessment version or the upward feedback version) to pinpoint specific training needs.
- Use the results from the self-assessment questionnaire as the basis for one-to-one coaching sessions.
- Distribute the handout ‘Introduction to effective delegation’ as a useful reminder for managers.
Remember, the Handouts and Slide Masters are available to purchasers of this manual to download from our website. This provides you with Word documents and PowerPoint slides that you can easily customise and incorporate in to your own training material.
