Assertiveness - Online
Assertiveness is the name given to a collection of behaviours that stem from a belief that your needs and wants are as important as other people's. The alternative is to believe that your needs and wants are less or more important than other people's. The former results in submissive behaviour, the latter in aggressive behaviour.
Assertive behaviour is at its best when you encounter people whose objectives conflict with what you want to achieve. Since behaviour breeds behaviour, assertive behaviour on your part is more likely to produce assertive behaviour in other people and this leads to better outcomes.
Assertiveness has something to offer everyone. If you tend to be officious and aggressive, it helps you to see how you can achieve your objectives with less friction and hostility. If you tend to be meek and mild, it helps you to become more effective in resisting any attempt to manipulate and exploit you. Either way, you need to practise assertive behaviour.
This module will help you to:
- Safeguard your rights in a way that doesn't violate other people's rights
- Express yourself in ways that are clear and unambiguous
- Be open and honest about your motives and intentions.
